"I believe that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another." -Thomas Jefferson
I'm never really sure why people do good things for others. Some people believe that it's their duty as a "good christian" to do good things for others as Jesus did. Others are raised knowing that they should do good things for others and will automatically help someone carrying something heavy. Some people selfishly help others, how selfishly? They do good things because they like the feeling they get from doing good, not for the other person. Some people seem to do it for the recognition and glory of being the humanitarian. Others quietly donate to causes they believe in and genuinely just want to make life better for others. Some people donate or get involved with a particular cause because it's personal to them. One of the main examples I can think of is Michael Jackson, he donated and got involved with helping kids because he had a crappy childhood. Occasionally, there are die hard believers in karma who do good things because they believe it'll come back to them in the future. There are an infinite number of reasons for people to do good.

Kara, you are right. There are selfish people who do good for others but they satisfy their own ego. At the mean time, there are people who really have humanitarian heart and are eager to help others. There is another group of people believing in Karma, which is defined in many religions. However, it is good to help others and be good to others despite all these truths.
Doing good unto others is in all of us. Our parents enforce this good by teaching us morals, values and lessons. Sometimes, we teach ourselves by accident. After a certain age, we somehow begin to decide and see if the things that our parents taught us when we were younger will continue to be part of our lives. Some people delete this whole part of their lives and turn to selfishness. This, ofcourse, shouldn't be the case, but unfortunatly, it happens. Good things come to those who wait, but we do not have the leisure to wait for goodness. We must be the change in this world for better, not for worse.
I think the sense of helping others is the primarily dominated by the religion and culture you were brought up in. People reared in a family with stron religious and ethical values find it as a part of life. Besides, it also cmes from the society and literature a person interacts with in his course of life. There have been many occasions when people moved by the brutal sufferings of war decide to devote their whole life to charity efforts.
i believe in inspiring rather than teaching, for you can easily forget what you've learned.. in my opinion, a positive upbringing contributes only a small portion in an individual's mind; the rest must be learned by him on his own throughout his life..
